Employee Vs Employer … Shiv Mallik

Do you support Work from Home (WFH) or Work from Office (WFO) ? This question is haunting employees & employers both.

Employee Story : When the pandemic hit, after WAVE One, my friend has vacated his apartment and moved back to hometown. Before doing so, he asked his leaders & HR when will we back to office, but got no clear response.

After going to his hometown, they have enrolled their kids in the best of the town school with very less cost of what he was paying in the city. They are able to take care of their parents and support them without moving in the hassle of the city. This was like dream for them who always wanted to move away from city pollution & traffic and enjoy more time with family & nature. Its been two years, it’s bliss and the organization he is working is bliss for him.

Now organization he is working with asking him to come back to office for at least 2 days in a week.

Employer Story : When pandemic hit, we didn’t know what will happen. Our first priority was to align with the government and health advisory. After Wave one over, we did see massive increase in the productivity of the people.

We were able to support our employees and government with WFH setup. We have given special allowance for our employees to setup desk at their desk.

But now we see massive impact in the innovation & collaboration. As Zoom fatigue kicks in we are loosing our creativity and market edge. It’s existential crisis and we want our people to back to office

If you are CEO or an employee, what will you do?

In either case, you need to break your unconscious biases.

Both need to agree on possibilities of WFH & WFO.

Some of the key roles & cadences needs more brainstorming & people connect. Employee & employers both needs to spend special effort in demystifying the possibilities of WFH & WFO.

There can’t be one rule that applies to all. Cynfin model can be the solution.

If you are working in Complex, Chaos & Disorder state, you would need people working in close proximity. Simple & Complicated systems can sustain on remote working.
